Admission & Practice
Attorneys may practice under three categories in the Virgin Islands: Regularly admitted attorneys; Specially admitted attorneys; and Pro Hac Vice attorneys.
(1) Regularly Admitted Attorneys: A regularly admitted attorney must pass the Virgin Islands bar exam as well as a character and fitness review. In addition, among the other requirements are: US citizenship or residency and graduation from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
(2) Specially Admitted Attorneys: These are usually government attorneys who are allowed to practice for a period of time before taking the V.I. bar exam so long as they are admitted in another U.S. jurisdiction.
(3) Pro Hac Vice Attorneys: These are attorneys admitted in another U.S. or foreign jurisdiction and who are admitted for the purpose of one particular case. There is a limit of 3 such appointments per attorney or law firm.
